2. INTRODUCTION
2. INTRODUCTION
LaserBinder is a file printing utility for owners of the Hewlett-
Packard LaserJet or compatible printer. This version is the
shareware distributed version. You get an expanded version of
LaserBinder when you register.
The program has six main purposes:
1. LaserBinder allows you to print, on a LaserJet compatible
printer, pages which will fit the very handy IBM-style
binder.
2. LaserBinder allows you to print, on a LaserJet compatible
printer, pages which will also fit nicely a normal style
binder.
3. LaserBinder saves paper by printing up to eight (8) 66-
line, 132-column pages on a single sheet of letter size
(8 1/2" x 11") paper. (front and back)
4. LaserBinder allows you to print documents which are too
wide to print on a normal page.
5. LaserBinder helps programmers maintain program listings
by automatically documenting them with file name, date,
time and page number.
6. LaserBinder helps by formatting the document on a true
66-line page, by correctly handling tabs, backspaces,
carriage returns, form feeds, overstriking and
underlining in the text.

4. PRINTER COMPATIBILITY
4. PRINTER COMPATIBILITY
LaserBinder will work very well with any Hewlett Packard LaserJet
or compatible printer equipped with a small, fixed pitch
landscape font. These include the Series II and compatible (using
the internal line printer font), the LaserJet or LaserJet+ with a
font cartridge, or with a soft font. Nevertheless, any other font
meeting the page format requirements may also be used.
LaserBinder also supports duplex printing on any Hewlett Packard
LaserJet II-D or compatible.
5. DEFAULT FONTS
5. DEFAULT FONTS
LaserBinder normally depends on the availability of a small fixed
pitch landscape font. If your printer does not have an internal
font which meets the characteristics describe below, you may
download such a font or provide it via a font cartridge.
Font characteristics: PC 8 symbol set
fixed spacing
16.6 pitch
8.5 point size
upright style
medium weight
line printer typeface
The font is selected by the LaserJet escape sequence:
[Esc](10U[Esc](sp16.6h8.5vsbT
If your font conforms to this specification, it will
automatically be selected. You can also use any other downloaded
landscape font by using some options (see the options for
details).
LaserBinder also depends on another font, a very tiny font, to
print in compressed mode. But, because this font is provided as
an internal font of LaserBinder, and because it is automatically
downloaded, to your printer, by LaserBinder, you should not have
any problem.

9. PAPER HANDLING
9. PAPER HANDLING
LaserBinder is design to simplify your life when it comes to
printing documents or listings. So the default settings force you
to use the cassette feeding ability of the printer for the front
and back of any printing job.
8 Copyright (C) 1991, 1992 by Micept Instruments Inc.
LaserBinder Version 1.20 User's Manual
Generally, to print the first side of any job you will use the
cassette feeding ability of the printer, although you can use
manual feeding if you wish (see the options).
Then, depending on the job size, you will either prefer to use
manual feeding or cassette feeding for the back side printing.
LaserBinder assumes that your printer stacks pages in REVERSE
order (last page printed on top of the stack and printed side
up). This is the case with Hewlett Packard LaserJets and
LaserJet+'s, and of the LaserJet Series II when using the rear
output tray. If your printer can not stack pages in reverse
order, your sheets will be stack in the wrong order after the
front side is printed. To solve this problem, either reverse the
order of the sheets in the stack before replacing them in the
paper tray, or use the REVERSE COLLATING OPTION (see the options)
to tell LaserBinder to print the back side from the last sheet to
the first one.
When you flip the paper to print the back side, the stack must be
flipped in the right direction depending on the page format you
are using to print the documents. If you are using any IBM-style
binder format, the top of the sheet (one of the side actually,
since we are printing in landscape) must remain on the same side
it was before printing the front side. If you are using any
standard binder, then since you will read the binder sideways,
the top of the sheet (one of the side actually, since we are
printing in landscape) must be inserted on the opposite side it
was before printing the front side.
Note that before you reinsert the paper into the printer, to
print the back side, if your paper is slightly curled, make sure
to uncurl it because too large a curl could cause imperfect
printing or even paper jams.
10. GENERAL OPERATION
10. GENERAL OPERATION
LaserBinder works in three stages. The first stage scans the
files to determine the number of pages to print, and the
beginning position of every page. The second stage prints the
front side of every sheet while the third stage prints the back
side of every sheet.
Copyright (C) 1991, 1992 by Micept Instruments Inc. 9
User's Manual LaserBinder Version 1.20
After the scan stage is completed, you are prompted with the
following message:
Ready to print the FRONT SIDE.
Selected feeding: Cassette
(A)bort, (M)anual, (C)assette, (U)nattended, (G)o?
At this prompt, you can press the following keys:
A :To abort and return to DOS.
M :To select manual feeding instead of cassette feeding.
C :To select cassette feeding instead of manual feeding.
U :To continue in unattended mode.
G :To continue with the current settings.
Later you will be prompted with a similar message before the back
side printing.
11. FORMAT OF COMMANDS
11. FORMAT OF COMMANDS
The following rules are used in this manual:
1. Words in capital letters are keywords and must be entered
as shown. They may be entered in uppercase or lowercase
characters.
2. Items in square brackets ([]) are optional.
3. Symbolic fields are enclosed in < >.
4. An ellipsis (...) indicates that an item may be repeated
as many time as you wish.
5. All punctuation, except the one mentioned before, must be
included where shown.

User's Manual LaserBinder Version 1.20
Options and file specifications, on the command line, must be
surrounded by at least one space, and options may not be combined
and preceded by a single dash.
LaserBinder will process files in the order they appear on the
command line, while, within a given file specification, files
will be processed in the same order they would be displayed in a
DOS directory command.
13. ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
13. ENVIRONMENT VARIABLE
LaserBinder's environment can be customized by the use of an
environment variable. The variable, if set, will specify the
default command line options. The options specified in that
variable will not replace but be added to the options invoked in
the command line. Options are specified in the same manner as if
they were invoked in the command line. The setting of this
variable can be automatically done if the set command is placed
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
The variable is called LBOPT and can be set by the following
command:
C>set LBOPT=-ibm -f -p1-10
That command would invoked the ibm, f and p options each time
LaserBinder is invoked.
14. FILES TO PRINT SELECTION
14. FILES TO PRINT SELECTION
Since LaserBinder allows you to enter many file names, which may
include path names and wild-card characters, you can select many
files and group of files on the same command line.
Here are a few examples:
C>lb myfile
In this example, the file named "myfile" would be
printed.
C>lb a:readme.1st *.c
12 Copyright (C) 1991, 1992 by Micept Instruments Inc.
LaserBinder Version 1.20 User's Manual
In this example, the file named "readme.1st" in the
current directory on drive A and all your C source files
in the current directory would be printed.
C>lb c:\autoexec.bat a:\*.*
In this example, the file named "autoexec.bat" in the
root directory on drive C and all the files in the root
directory on drive A would be printed.
15. OPTIONS IN MORE DETAILS
15. OPTIONS IN MORE DETAILS
You may specify options (or "switches") in any order, and they
may be interspersed with file specifications. These options are
global, they refers to all the files specified on the command
line, regardless of position.
The following describes the options (or "switches") in more
detail.
-B {Back side only}
-B {Back side only}
LaserBinder usually prints on both sides of every sheet of paper.
It prints the front side in the first pass and the back side in
the second pass. If you want to print the back side only, you may
by using the -B switch.
C>LB -b thisfile
This will only print the back side of every sheet for the
file named "thisfile". You can later reverse the paper and
print the other side using the -F switch.
Note that this does not produce the same result as a single-side
printing. This is very useful when you want to split a printing
job in two parts, printing one side at one time and the other
side later.
-C {Compressed mode}
-C {Compressed mode}
LaserBinder usually prints using a small font to produce 80-
column pages. It also has the ability to produce 132-column pages

User's Manual LaserBinder Version 1.20
using a tiny internal font (internal to LaserBinder not to your
printer). This can be very useful when you have wide documents,
spreadsheets or listings to print and you want to avoid truncated
or wrapped lines. The -C switch tells LaserBinder to enter its
compressed mode and use this tiny font.
C>LB -c thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the internal
tiny font, producing 132-column pages.
Note that each page will have 132 lines instead of 66 in the
compressed mode. See the -4 option also.
-CR {Carriage Return only}
-CR {Carriage Return only}
This switch allows you to print files which only use a carriage
return (as opposed to a carriage return, line feed combination)
to mark the end of a line in a file.
C>LB -cr thisfile
The file named "thisfile" will be printed assuming a new line
starts at every carriage return or line feed.
Note that for MS-DOS files, most overprint lines are generated by
a carriage return not immediately followed by a line feed. Since
using this switch will assume a new line starts at every carriage
return, overprinted text will appear on the following line.
Fortunately, however, the files which uses only a carriage return
to denote the end of a line, usually use another technique, using
backspaces, to overprint text, and this is supported by
LaserBinder.
-D {Duplex mode}
-D {Duplex mode}
LaserBinder normally assumes that your printer can only print on
one side at a time. This option allows you, if you have a
Hewlett-Packard LaserJet II-D or compatible, to print sheets on
both sides at the same time. This makes printing a breeze every
time.

C>LB -d thisfile
This prints the file named "thisfile" in duplex mode on any
Hewlett-Packard LaserJet II-D or compatible.
-ESC {Bypass ESC characters}
-ESC {Bypass ESC characters}
LaserBinder usually sends every character in the file to the
printer, except when it comes to ESC (Hex 1B) characters. Because
this character is used to send commands to the printer,
LaserBinder, in order not to send undesired commands to the
LaserJet, substitutes ESC characters by "left arrow" (Hex 11)
characters. However you may override this by using the -ESC
switch to tell LaserBinder to send escape characters directly to
the printer.
C>LB -esc thisfile
This prints the file named "thisfile" sending every escape
character directly to the printer.
Note that this option may be useful if you want your file(s) to
send specific sequences to control the printer.
-F {Front side only}
-F {Front side only}
LaserBinder usually prints on both sides of every sheet of paper.
It prints the front side in the first pass and the back side in
the second pass. If you want to print the front side only, you
may by using the -F switch.
C>LB -f thisfile
This will only print the front side of every sheet for the
file named "thisfile". You can later reverse the paper and
print the other side using the -B switch.
Note that this does not produce the same result as a single-side
printing. This is very useful when you want to split a printing
job in two parts, printing one side at one time and the other
side later.

-FL:<string> {Footer Left}
-FL:<string> {Footer Left}
LaserBinder normally prints a default header on top, and a
default footer at the bottom of each page. You may use this
switch to change the default footer for the left page of every
sheet.
The default header control string for the left page of every
sheet is described in the DEFAULT SETTINGS section of this
manual.
C>LB -fl:%cPage_%p thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the defined
footer for the left page of every sheet. The bottom of the
page would contain the word "Page " followed by the page
number, all that centered.
C>LB -fl: thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" with no footer for
the left page of every sheet.
Note that no spaces are allowed in the control string.
The format of the control string is very simple and only a few
characters and character strings are substituted when encountered
in the string.
They are:
Character(s) Generates
_ a space
%% a % character
%n the file name
%m the file's modification time
%f the file's modification date
%t the system time (the time of the day)
%d the system date (today's date)
%p the page number
%l a left justification command
%r a right justification command

LaserBinder usually depends on certain fonts to do its work.
However, you can successfully use LaserBinder with any other font
by using this switch.
C>LB -fontd:\(10U\sp16.6h8.5vsbT thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the font
specified by the string in the -FONTD switch. In this case
the font selected would be the default font.
Note that the character "\" is used to replace the escape
character required in the sequence. Consult your printer manual
for more information on this escape sequence which selects the
font by its characteristics.
-FONT#:<number> {FONT number}
-FONT#:<number> {FONT number}
LaserBinder usually depends on certain fonts to do its work.
However, you can successfully use LaserBinder with any other font
by using this switch.
C>LB -font#:500 thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the
downloaded font number 500.
Note that the selected font must have been downloaded as a
permanent font before, and assigned the number 500. The font must
also have an appropriate size for the selected page format but
LaserBinder has no way of knowing that.
-FR:<string> {Footer Right}
-FR:<string> {Footer Right}
LaserBinder normally prints a default header on top, and a

the right page of every sheet.
Note that no spaces are allowed in the control string.
See the -FL switch for more details on the control string.
-FRA:<string> {FRAme style}
-FRA:<string> {FRAme style}
LaserBinder uses a default frame for every page format available.
The frame consists of hole targets and lines at the top, bottom,
left, right, center and middle (vertical center) of the sheet.
You may use this switch to change the frame style LaserBinder
will use.
The default frame style is described in the DEFAULT SETTINGS
section of this manual.
C>LB -fra:ch thisfile
This prints the file named "thisfile" with a frame
consisting of a line at the center of the sheet plus hole
targets located appropriately for the selected format.
The control string is made of the following characters:

-IBM {IBM-style binder switch}
-IBM {IBM-style binder switch}
LaserBinder provides support for this very popular style of
binder. The creation of printouts, which will be held in an IBM-
style binder, is very easy with LaserBinder.
All you have to do, is specified the right page format and
LaserBinder, using standard letter size paper, will create pages
which can be easily cut in half, punched and inserted into an
IBM-style binder.
After printing, the pages are also positioned in such a way as to
minimize the work required to insert them into the binder. Simply
take the right half stack of sheet, flip it over, and insert it
after the left half stack. That's all.
Note that the positions reserved for the holes is at both ends of
the sheet as to minimize paper surface loss, since the LaserJet
can not print very close to the border of the sheet.
LaserBinder usually assumes that you are using an IBM-style
binder. There is no need to use this option unless you want to
override a preceding option. See the SUPPORTED PAGE FORMATS
section.
-ID:<number> {IDentification number}
-ID:<number> {IDentification number}
LaserBinder usually use the font number 1234 to identify the tiny
font it downloads to the printer. If this font number creates
problems because it is used for another font on your printer, you
may change it with this switch.

LaserBinder Version 1.20 User's Manual
C>LB -id:999 thisfile -c
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the font
number 999 to identify the tiny font it will download to the
printer.
-IL:<number> {Indentation Left}
-IL:<number> {Indentation Left}
This switch allows you to tell LaserBinder to indent each printed
line by a specified number of character positions. This allows
the centering of documents which are unformatted or "badly"
formatted. This switch is only used for the page printed on the
left of the sheet. Use the -IR switch for the page on the right.
C>LB -il:8
This will print the document with the pages on the left of the
sheet having every line indented eight character positions.
Note that the indentation also applies to wrapped lines.
-IR:<number> {Indentation Right}
-IR:<number> {Indentation Right}
This switch allows you to tell LaserBinder to indent each printed
line by a specified number of character positions. This allows
the centering of documents which are unformatted or "badly"
formatted. This switch is only used for the page printed on the
right of the sheet. Use the -IL switch for the page on the left.
C>LB -ir:8
This will print the document with the pages on the right of the
sheet having every line indented eight character positions.
Note that the indentation also applies to wrapped lines.
-MB {Manual feeding - Back side}
-MB {Manual feeding - Back side}
LaserBinder normally causes the printer to feed sheets from the
paper cassette when printing the front and reverse sides. To use
manual feeding for the back side, use the -MB switch.
Copyright (C) 1991, 1992 by Micept Instruments Inc. 21
User's Manual LaserBinder Version 1.20
C>LB -mb thisfile
This prints the file named "thisfile" in the current directory,
using manual feeding for the back side.
As described under GENERAL OPERATION, you can also override the
selected feeding mode, at the prompt preceding the start of
printing.
-MF {Manual feeding - Front side}
-MF {Manual feeding - Front side}
LaserBinder normally causes the printer to feed sheets from the
paper cassette when printing the front and reverse sides. To use
manual feeding for the front side, use the -MF switch.
C>LB -mf thisfile
This prints the file named "thisfile" in the current
directory, using manual feeding for the front side.
As described under GENERAL OPERATION, you can also override the
selected feeding mode, at the prompt preceding the start of
printing.
-OPT:<filename> {OPTion file}
-OPT:<filename> {OPTion file}
Since the same series of options are usually used over and over
for similar printing jobs, this switch allows you to use a file
where the list of options are already defined. This is very
useful if you want your program listings to look alike, all your
manuals to look alike... You simply create a file describing all
the options required to produce your listings. You do the same
for your manuals...
Example of a file for your manuals:
;
; Format file for the manuals (FILE: MANUAL.OPT)

C>LB -opt:listing thisfile
This will print the file named "thisfile" using the options
listed in the file named "listing.opt".
Note that any blank line or any line beginning with a semi-colon
will be taken as a comment line. There can only be one option per
line. The default file name extension for the option file is
".OPT".
-OUT:<filename> {OUTput file}
-OUT:<filename> {OUTput file}
By default, LaserBinder sends its output to the PRN device of MS-
DOS. You can change the output device using the MODE command of
DOS. You can also redirect the output of LaserBinder to a file
instead of a device. This is done using the -OUT option.
C>LB -out:output.lst thisfile
This will redirect the output of LaserBinder to the file
named "output.lst" in the current directory when printing
the file named "thisfile".
To print the file later, simply type:
COPY /B OUTPUT.LST PRN:
Note: The /B option is very important because the file
contains much more than just text and, in order to be
sent correctly, it must be copied as a binary file.
Tip: We suggest that you separate the front and back side
output into two jobs (two files) when you use this

option, otherwise you may have trouble knowing which
sheet and side you are up to.
Do as follows:
C>LB -f -out:front.lst thisfile
C>LB -b -out:back.lst thisfile
C>COPY /B front.lst PRN:
Reverse the stack of paper
C>COPY /B back.lst PRN:
-P[<number>][-][<number>] {Page selection}
-P[<number>][-][<number>] {Page selection}
LaserBinder usually prints the entire file(s). However, if you
only need part of it or if you need to reprint a section (a range
of pages) or a single page, use the -p switch.
C>LB thisfile -p10
This will only print the sheet containing the page 10 of the
file named "thisfile". The sheet may also contain other
pages depending on the selected page format.
C>LB thisfile -f -p4-12
This will print the front side of the sheets containing the
pages 4 through 12 (inclusively) of the file named
"thisfile".
C>LB -b thisfile -p-5
This will print the back side of the sheets containing the
pages 1 through 5 (inclusively) of the file named
"thisfile".
C>LB -p17- thisfile
This will print the sheets containing the pages 17 through
the last of the file named "thisfile".
Note that the -P option applies to every file selected for
printing, so it is usually only used when printing a single file.

LaserBinder Version 1.20 User's Manual
-R {Reverse collating}
-R {Reverse collating}
LaserBinder usually assumes that your printer stack pages in
REVERSE order (last page printed on top of the stack and printed
side up). This is the case with Hewlett Packard LaserJets and
LaserJet+'s, and of the LaserJet Series II when using the rear
output tray. If your printer can not stack pages in reverse
order, your sheets will be stack in the wrong order after the
front side is printed. This is the case when using the top output
tray with a LaserJet. Use this option to tell LaserBinder to use
reverse collating to remedy that problem. See the PAPER HANDLING
section for more information.
-S {Single-sided printing}
-S {Single-sided printing}
Even though LaserBinder was designed to save paper by printing on
both sides of every sheet, it is possible, under certain
circumstances, to print single-sided documents. This will avoid
the necessary paper handling to print the reverse side. Of
course, this switch is only available in the standard binder
printing mode.
C>LB thisfile -s -std
This produces a single-sided printout for a standard binder.
-STD {STanDard-style binder}
-STD {STanDard-style binder}
LaserBinder provides support for a standard-style binder. The
creation of printouts, which will be held in that kind of binder,
is very easy with LaserBinder.
All you have to do, is specified the right page format and
LaserBinder, using standard letter size paper, will create pages
which can be easily punched and inserted into a standard-style
binder.
After printing, the pages are also positioned in such a way as to
minimize the work required to insert them into the binder.
Since LaserBinder usually assumes that you are using an IBM-style
binder, you must use this option to tell it you are using a
standard-style binder. See the SUPPORTED PAGE FORMATS section.

User's Manual LaserBinder Version 1.20
-T {Truncate lines}
-T {Truncate lines}
LaserBinder normally wraps every line which is too long to fit
the selected page format. If a line plus indentation is longer
than the number of characters allowed. The first printed line
will contain the first part of the line, the rest will be printed
on the following line(s). However, if you prefer that these lines
(too long lines) be truncated rather than wrapped, in order to
maintain the same page ends or for other reasons, you may by
using this switch.
C>LB -t thisfile
This will tell LaserBinder that you want long lines to be
truncated rather than wrapped.
Note that when a line is truncated, part of it is not printed
anywhere. LaserBinder will warn you, after the scan pass, of the
number of line(s) which will need to be truncated or wrapped.
-TAB:<number> {TABulation spacing}
-TAB:<number> {TABulation spacing}
LaserBinder normally assumes that all tab columns are eight
characters apart. You may change this default assumption by
specifying the new column width.
C>LB -tab:10 thisfile
The file will be printed assuming that tab columns are ten
characters apart.
-U {Unattended mode}
-U {Unattended mode}
LaserBinder normally prompts you before printing the front side,
and again before printing the back side. Using the -U switch will
eliminate these prompts. This means that you will not be given an
opportunity to reverse the paper, put it back into the cassette
to print the reverse side. This also means that everything must
have been specified correctly before the printing job started.
This switch is usually used in conjunction with the -S, -MB or
the -D switches.
C>LB -u -d thisfile
26 Copyright (C) 1991, 1992 by Micept Instruments Inc.
LaserBinder Version 1.20 User's Manual
This will print the file named "thisfile" without prompting
you. The specified printer will print in duplex mode, both
sides at the same time.
-X:<number> {Number of copies}
-X:<number> {Number of copies}
LaserBinder allows you to print any number of copies, between 1
and 99, of your file(s). Unfortunately, if it save printing time,
printing more than 1 copy complicates collating.
C>LB -x:5 thisfile
This will print five copies of the file named "thisfile".
Note that LaserBinder uses the multiple copies escape sequence of
the LaserJet to make many copies.
-Z {Bypass Ctrl-Z}
-Z {Bypass Ctrl-Z}
Since LaserBinder was made to handle mostly text files, and that
many MS-DOS programs still create and use file containing a Ctrl-
Z (Hex 1A) character to mark the end of file, LaserBinder will
consider the file to end at the first occurrence of a Ctrl-Z
character. However, for particular needs, you may override this
by using the -Z switch to tell LaserBinder to bypass the Ctrl-Z
character and read the whole file.
Tip: If it seems that LaserBinder is only printing part of
your file, try using this switch; the worst thing that
can append is that you will see some garbage at the end
of your printout, but it might get your whole file
printed instead.
-4 {4 pages per side mode}
-4 {4 pages per side mode}
LaserBinder usually prints using a small font. The -4 option
tells LaserBinder to enter its 4-pages-per-side mode and use its
tiny font.
C>LB -4 thisfile
